NON STARTER EARLY MORNINGS
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:22:30 PM »

Hi  again,
these cold mornings are not helping my bus.
Car won,t start, after 3 turns battery is dead.
Jump start of a friend , fires straight away, and stops and starts all day long, until it sits there overnight.
I have ordered some glow plugs to rule that theory out first.
Althou i had the same problem last year, once the cold had pasted, its been fine until now.
The only option is put it in the garage overnight, if i had one lol

forgot to say, relay light glows for 2 secs, should it be longer, and also ,is there a noticable click noise when the light goes out at all from the relay, cos i don,t and the glow light has always gone out after 2 secs regardless what time of the year it is

glow light does go out after a couple of seconds its the click from the relay that tells you the the glow plugs go off.
try turning the keys to on wait for the click then turn off
repeat three times then try starting.
should find that will get you started.
but if your not kicking out enough power from the battery your just not going to get started
check out your battery rating.

Hi again Tony, not sure, ill have to check, just went out to the car and it has died on me again, been stood for 5 hrs.
The more i think about it i,m convinced a combo of glow plugs and relay are the fault and its freezing out there now

If you're only getting 3 turns from the battery before it dies then surely the battery is suspect?  If it's not too old then check the terminals are really clean & tight - the standard Toyota ones are, oddly, poor quality but easy enough to change.

Check there is current to the glowplug busbar too - use a test lamp or meter, not unusual for the busbar to crack.

If your mates battery is able to start it no problem then your battery is at fault imo. Either your battery is underpower/knackered or its not being charged enough or theres a drain on the battery over night Smiley

Cold is a battery killer too if they are getting on a bit.

this is a sure sign of a dieing/dead battery
have the battery tested to see how bad it is, BUT i can assure you that it will fail, also check that the alternator is charging that battery at least at 13.5 volt while running, a quick check for the battery is to put an analogue volt meter across it and watch the needle while cranking the engine SHOULD not drop below 10.5 Volts.
If it is a Used Japanese Import ( sorry I am NZ based so not sure of your laws) then when replacing the glowplugs be cautious as some of the diesels in Japan use a "quick glow" system that use 6 volt glowplugs that get to temp faster,BUT are not interchangeable with the "General" spec vehicles as the timer is different..
The Timer is all toyota vehicles use the resistance of the glow plugs to know how long to glow for, so if you are getting short glow times then it could indicate that either one or more glow plug is dead or that maybe the wrong glow plugs have been installed..

problem is solved with the new battery.
I had done loads of tests on the alternator with every thing running and it always kicked out the right power
glow plugs new from auto jap parts genesis twin coil glow plugs been a god send for heating the cold oil for starting in the morning.
