As the title says, put your oil questions here and we'll be happy to help.

The Year, model, engine and style of driving (road/track) is important so give as much information as possible so that we can give you an accurate answer.

Given the short service intervals with most of our busses (Every 3000 Miles), would you say there is any benefit in using part/fully synth?. Also, does a higher mileage engine require better quality oil, or does it not really matter?.

At least a semi woud be the minimum but why not use sythetic and extend the service periods......save yourself some money!

My database says use 5w-20 for these cars post 2001 all 5w-20's are fully synthetic.

I would guess there is no one here using this grade as it is hard to get hold of, we have one here for road use

You could also use a 5w-30 which would be perfectly suited to car and UK climate

If you have the CVT transmission it requires a special oil, we have a CVT Fluid here that will be ok for your cars as well.

Where does the 3000 mile service period come from as I cannot see any requirements on my database?

Hi Guy,
It comes from the sticker next to the oil filler cap. It's on all of the diesel Estimas. The majority of these are all pre 1997/8, there are niot many after that.

I would have thought that you could get away with a synthetic 5w-40 for around 9000 miles. At twice the cost this would save a bit of money........most synthetics are good for this or more.

Theses busses seem to suffer with the marmite/treacle thing if you go much more than the recommended service interval. Toyota recommend 5w30 every 3k miles. Have seen some horrific pictures of peoples sumps after ignoring the intervals!.

Thats curious as a decent 5w-30 needn't cost the earth and should certainly clean better than 3000 miles.

Thanks Guy, I might give it a shot next oil change. The oil turns black pretty quick in these lumps, either through poor maintenance, or via a poorly maintained crankcase breather set up. These engines are probably getting on for 20 years old now!!

Oh, I know, but we're talking in a very clean engine, after perhaps 200-300 miles. I'm always happy with the quality when I change it, and I know a diesel is nothing like a petrol, but the modern lumps seem to stay cleaner for longer!

I'd love to try this but my oil change light makes me nervous everytime I see it, oil changes are are a ritual for me these days.
Even 6000 miles a time would be a bit of a blessing over the winter months Grin

Mine has had a change every 3000 since I got it plus there's little to no smoke while running and emissions are very low. Even then my oil is black almost as soon as it starts after a change

We've just gone for some 10w30.   Swanny said Toyota recommend 5w30, shop closes at 1.30 and their system is saying 15w30.... so we've split the difference.   Hopefully, this will get us to Cov with no mishaps
