Steering Box
« on: November 22, 2009, 09:11:29 AM »

Anybody know anything about servicing and adjusting the steering box on a Hi-Ace as the steering on our new camper is best described as 'vague' !!

Had a look underneath while the wife turned the steering wheel and can see lots of input to the box with not much output !!!

There's a locknut and a screw on the side but not sure how far to adjust it......keep going until it won't steer and then back if off a bit or is there a more precise measurement ??  Wink

The lock nut on the side shouldn't need adjusting.. I'd be looking at fluid condition, level and pump.. also for any signs of fluid leak from rack.

Right finally had a look and first thing noticed is it's not powered steering.

I then topped up the oil in the steering box and made a slight adjustment which did improve things a bit but then noticed that most of the play is in the steering column universal joint just above the box!!!  Undecided

So I need a new steering column....can anybody point me in the direction of somewhere that may supply one and does anybody know if it's all one piece from top to bottom or not?

Cheers

I don't see why not... only thing might be the actual length...  Shocked
I'd give Gary at GT Motors a ring and see if he has one in his warehouse of spares..  Wink
