T4 battle of wills..
« on: November 04, 2010, 05:54:35 PM »

Got a friends T4 on drive, which had sheared the key off the crank gear.
Optimistically he went for a new belt, tensioner and crank gear... but although it turned over and stayed timed, appeared to have no compression.
Have today spent day stripping engine down to get head off. Apart from some really awkward allen bolts and the exhaust spring clamps, have got it stripped down. Well I say stripped down, the head is STILL on held in place by 6 of the 10 bolts. This is due to not being able to undo the cam bolt... it just will not shift. Tried knuckle bar, knocker gun, lump hammer and chisel and quite a few choice words.  Tongue:Smiley
Only option left as I do not have gas/oxy torch is to cut it off with angle grinder. But this will leave a useless cam bolt.. not too much problem if I can source one as from look of head it WILL be a recon head anyway.
6 of the 8 valves are open and seem jammed... not holding much hope for the pistons at this point.  Cry

Head off yesterday morning.. all 4 inlet valves bent, luckily just faint marks on pistons.. but no scoring ,cracks or dents.
Head now at Head Centre at Par for reconditioning, should be ready for tuesday.

Out of curiosity I got quote from VW for head change... £1700- ... funnily enough he chose to go with me rebuilding it..lol.

Recon Head.. £350-
Gaskets and bolts, etc about £100-
plus a few odd bits like oil and coolant.

So I have a busy tuesday ahead of me.  Tongue

The kind peeps at T4 club provided me with head bolt sequence and torque settings... very nice peeps  Grin

New toy arrived yesterday in post..

C clamp tool.. was fun removing them without it... would be even more fun putting them back on without tool.
Hope it works ok.

Will try it 2moro on the 2.4 T4 camper as that's lost a C clamp.. :Smiley

After dodging rain for several days plus climbing out of my pit at 3am for work... I finished the T4..  Grin
Took a while to get it to feed fuel up, especially as I wasn't informed it had an immobilser fitted...chipped key type... and he hadn't given me THAT key...lol
Fired up nicely with some advance on lever... got it warmed up and then adjusted advance on pump. Now doesn't need to use lever on fire up, something I was informed it had always needed since lat belt change.

Have some pics that I'll post up next time I have 5 to upload them. Wink
