Estima 3C-TE Injector Pump Electrical Fault
« on: January 01, 2012, 02:03:36 AM »

Hi all am new on this site, have read on all the posts in hear hoping to find similar and have the following issue also posted in a similar site but need your help here too.
I had the Injector pump replaced in my 1996 3C-TE Estima and upon turning the ignition in the on position, there is a continuous ticking sound right on the spill control valve. see video>>

Toyota Estima 2.2 TD - Unsolved Injector Pump Spill Valve Solenoid problem powered by Aeva

The Engine would crank but would not turn over.(no diesel coming to the injectors)
When i disconnect the black wire (Earth) from the spill control valve and ground  it directly to the body,it does not make the ticking sound eventually Diesel comes to the injectors(bleed) and the bus starts, but oddly the engine revs itself up to 2000 RPMs with Diesel Knock and excess whitish smoke which i presume means excess fuel presumably as a result of the valve not being correctly controlled by the ECU.

I first suspected that the spill control valve on the new pump was faulty and swapped it with the one on the old pump but oddly also made the same tick sound.I also tried reconnecting the original injector pump and oddly the same happened which i found puzzling...i read in other forums that where the valve had to be heated for the bus to start (cold start extreme low temps)but it did not make the ticking sound that mine does but it was later suspected an issue of an RPM  sensor.
To further trouble shoot,I tried another ECU but the its did the same.
Is there anyone who has ever come across such a problem as its really puzzled me including my mechanics and would this issue have to do with sensors such as a engine speed sensor or some other sensor?I have have inspected the wiring harness from the injector pump to the ECU but have not found any issues.

Many thanks!

I have read that there are a couple of different fuel pumps for the 3cte engine. have you checked that the pump matches your old pump.
the timing on the new pump could be set up a little different than your old one may be worth your while undoing the two bolts that let you adjust the timing position move it while the engine is running small amounts you will here the difference.
the only other way would be take it to a specialist and get it re timed

Many thanks for your reply ADarbon, the pump i got is the same as the original one that was in there.surprisingly even the old one behaves the same way but i did not before.Tried adjusting the the pump(advancing or retarding) but nothing still

That either does not work, from what i am beginning to understand, the spill control valve does not seem to get the correct ground feed from the ECU enough to open it and allow diesel to go through on starting, hence when i ground in directly to the body it opens but does not operate as intended hence its just lets excess fuel get delivered to the injectors causing the sudden rev to 2000RMP a similar issue some one also experienced with a Toyota Prado http://forum.ih8mud.com/70-series-tech/399117-kzj78-starting-problem.html
on this forum i read.I also understand that the Toyota surf pump is pretty much identical to the ones used in these buses. but the problem with one one the Prado in the forum had with the valve was not exactly as mine as his did not make tick sound but exhibited the same behavior.(High Engine Rev and white smoke).how ever the thread ended minus the solution.

Hi mate you say the 2 pumps are exactly the same? are they the same number? on the 3cte pump ther is a number on top if you get another pump it has to match the number that you already have to work properly,

Thanks for you response,I will have to counter check that to verify the numbers are the same.would you suggest that if the new pump may have upset the ECU in the even it wasn't the correct number to the new one?As i have mentioned even putting back the original pump did not solve the issue.

I remember someone had trouble with the spill control valve on the veg site, he replaced his and all was well but your problem sounds a bit more in depth as both pumps do the same.

Its still a puzzle as to why this happened, tried swapping the spill control valves but still the same tick sound. As long as the ticking sounds,it wont let diesel go through it to the injectors during cranking.still carrying out my research also ordered a Toyota 3C-TE ENGINE MANUAL(Hard to find now) to assist in carrying out in-depth troubleshooting with electricals.

Hi if you have affected the ECU try disconnecting the live terminal from the battery for a minuet then re connect it and see it that will clear the ECU

I tried that as the second line of troubleshooting when this happened but that didn't help either

Glad you got to the bottom of this problem seems to be a few reports of ECU deaths lately. Happy motoring
